Originally expected to be a concept album about a turn-of-the-century love triangle with a murder sub-plot, the Big Friendly Corporation's 3rd album "Nocturne" evolved into a frenzy of musical styles and lyrical subjects. From indie to punk, BFC drift in and out of historical song genres, as well as take chances on different soundscapes. Songs like "Bad Taste" and "Whirling Dervish" see Big Friendly going in a more experimental direction, while "The Watcher" and "I Got A Girl" keep them firmly planted in their roots.
One key difference between "Nocturne" and Big Friendly albums of the past is a Beatles-esque approach to lead singing and song writing. Before, Ryan Marth was the primary lead singer/song writer. With "Nocturne," the duty is shared with everyone equally to delightful avail. In fact, half of the album is written by drummer, Mike McDonald.
Some of the concept album ideas are still present in songs like "Tonight" and "Sunrise (It's All Over Now)." But a larger portion of the album covers different subjects like betrayal ("Outerspace") and astrophilia ("The Watcher").
This is the second album that the band recorded with friend Brian Garth (Black Camaro). And the first to be recorded in Garth's new studio in downtown Las Vegas provocatively called Chrome Werewolf.
